Cardiothoracic Surgery

Overview

The Cardiothoracic (CT) Surgery Residency Program provides you with a comprehensive training in the entire spectrum of therapy in CT Surgery. You will be exposed to the rich SingHealth CT Surgery clinical case mix ranging from Adult Cardiac Surgery and General Thoracic Surgery to minimally invasive Cardiac & Thoracic Surgery, Heart Failure/Assist Device/Transplant Surgery, Robotically Assisted Surgery as well as Aortic and Endovascular Surgery.

 

Designed to produce outstanding Cardiothoracic Surgeons, the program is carefully structured with regular formative assessments and timely feedback. You will be closely mentored by dedicated Faculty and your training progress is monitored to ensure that clinical and surgical skills are developed well.

 

You are invited to join the program after completing either your Transitional Year (TY) or Housemanship. You can also apply for the program in your TY or Housemanship Year. If you are a committed individual who is highly motivated, responsible and a good team player, we look forward to grooming you into a confident and competent clinician who will have much to contribute to healthcare.

Extensive patient case mix and clinical material

A wealth of clinical material prepares you for the entire spectrum of therapy for Cardiovascular disease, from Adult Cardiac Surgery to Aortic and Endovascular Surgery. The National Heart Center Singapore (NHCS) is home to the largest group of heart specialists in Singapore, and our doctors see the widest case mix of patients locally. We aim to train proficient CT Surgeons to provide cutting-edge tertiary and quaternary care across all boundaries.

Equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, the new NHCS building will foster a vibrant Academic Medicine environment to enhance interaction between researchers and clinicians. It also features a whole level dedicated to research ranging from stem cells to identifying biomarkers causing sudden cardiac death.

If you have your heart on research, the CT Surgery Residency program will give you ample opportunities to pursue your passion. Prominent research platforms, forums and workshops are a regular part of the program, helping you make your mark as a surgeon on an international stage.

 

The Curriculum

CT Surgery Residents are required to complete two years of Surgery-In-General Residency, which includes:

· 12 months in General Surgery rotation

· Six months in the assigned surgical specialty

· Three months each in Emergency Medicine & Anaesthesia/Critical Care

 

The advanced CT Surgery training is spent in Cardiothoracic rotations at NHCS, Singapore General Hospital and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

 

All CT Surgery Residents are to complete:

· Three-and-a-half years of clinical rotations to Adult

Cardiovascular Surgery, Congenital Cardiac Surgery and General Thoracic Surgery

· Six months of General Surgery (Vascular)

Career Prospects
The title of Associate Consultant is given upon successful specialist accreditation and registration with the Specialists Accreditation Board and Singapore Medical Council. During the two years as an Associate Consultant, there will be opportunities for further subspecialization in a particular field of interest in CT Surgery.
