A Word from Our Program Director
This is an exciting time to be a Senior Resident in Rheumatology. In the early 1980s when I was an Internal Medicine trainee, getting a traineeship only guaranteed a posting in that Specialty. Without a structured teaching program, I learnt on the job. Later, as a Fellow in Rheumatology in UCLA, USA from 1986 to 1988, I saw what a proper specialist training program was and looked forward to a time when all trainees could have proper training here in Singapore.
Today, Singapore General Hospital (SGH) has a well-structured ACGME-I accredited Rheumatology Senior Residency Program. We have a comprehensive Program of international standard; a Faculty that is passionate, experienced and dedicated to helping our Senior Residents succeed through close supervision and timely feedback; and a large patient pool in our Autoimmunity & Rheumatology Centre (ARC). The ARC is the first such centre in the region to provide a one-stop service dedicated to complex Rheumatology and autoimmune disorders. As a Senior Resident, you will have the opportunity to learn in ARC’s general Rheumatology, sub-specialty (e.g. Scleroderma Clinic, Lupus Clinic, Spondyloarthritis Clinic, etc) as well as Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Clinics. Our inpatient Rheumatology service takes care of patients with a wide range of complicated rheumatic diseases. As our Senior Resident, you will also benefit from our hospital’s strength in having expertise in most, if not all adult medical and surgical specialties. These experts are regularly invited to teach our Residents. If your interest is in research, our department has a vibrant, nurturing, innovative and productive research culture and is accredited to train Clinician Scientist Residents in research. With our close association with Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, our Senior Residents will participate in medical education.
SGH Rheumatology already has a good program and we are committed to making it even better. While keeping abreast of the best practices in the world, we encourage our Senior Residents’ feedback on how to further enhance our program. A posting in Kandang Kerbau Women and Children Hospital (KKH) will also enable you to enhance the learning of Pediatric Rheumatology.
I invite you to join our department as a Senior Resident and to grow and serve our patients with us as a cohesive team, synergistically and with passion. I look forward to working closely with you to guide you to become the best Rheumatologist that you can be.
