Infectious Diseases at a Glance
Infectious Diseases (ID) is a specialty that traverses the traditional boundaries of organ-specific specialties.
ID physicians are first and foremost, competent in general internal medicine; but at the same time, they are knowledgeable about surgical issues, including subspecialty surgical problems such as those in neurosurgery, orthopaedics, cardiothoracic surgery and ophthalmology.
ID physicians have an intimate knowledge of the workings of the other specialties, in addition to their understanding of infection, infectious diseases, the immune response, and anti-infectives. This makes the ID physician a valuable member of the healthcare team.
If you are looking for a career in medicine that spans specialties, you should consider ID.
Ideally, you should have a strong interest in infectious diseases and full medical registration with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC). You should also have completed an ACGME-I accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program.
We also welcome trainees who have successfully completed BST training in Singapore, a JCST approved program outside Singapore, or a one-year pre-fellowship program in a JCST non-approved program outside of Singapore.
Additionally, you should have passed the following intermediate examinations: MRCP (UK), MRCP (Ireland), MMed (Int Med) Singapore, FRACP (Pt II), orABIM diploma, or PGME .
You must be a good team player with excellent interpersonal skills and an academic mind, plus a positive outlook and enthusiasm for managing complex issues and perplexing patients.

A Word from Our Program Director
Thank you for your interest in the SingHealth Infectious Diseases Medical Senior Residency Program. The Infectious Diseases training program spans three years.
The first two years of the Program is accredited by ACGME-I and will prepare you for an academic and/or a clinical career in the discipline of Infectious Diseases.
The third year will consist of electives in subspecialty areas of interest, and may be spent in clinical care, research, or a combination of both.
As the nation’s largest and leading healthcare cluster, SingHealth offers the most number of clinical subspecialties plus an unrivalled range of case mix. As such, trainees on our program will have access to training in almost all aspects of ID in adults.
We welcome you to join us on the ID program.
Why SingHealth Infectious Disease?
Exposure to Wide Case-mix in Infectious Diseases
A major focus of our Program is on inpatient consultations from all medical and surgical disciplines at the two major training facilities (Singapore General Hospital/Changi General Hospital). Trainees will be exposed to a very wide case-mix at the two hospitals to help you hone your clinical skills and experience.
Comprehensive Training in Infections Diseases
As with most subspecialty training programs, our Program offers a combination of teaching and management rounds. You will participate in patient-based rounds, in which current cases are presented for discussion. The comprehensive discussions may include a range of issues, such as interpretation of clinical data, differential diagnosis, specific management of the patient, the appropriate use of anti-infectives, the incorporation of evidence and patient values in clinical decision making and disease prevention.
Our training curriculum comprises an excellent mix of clinical activities, didactic educational activities and research opportunities.
Trainees will attend and participate in Wednesday Trainees Lecture series, Journal clubs and Friday Inter-hospital Grand rounds. In addition, combined rounds, such as Surgical/Neurosurgical Intensive Care Rounds and Burns Grand Rounds, will give you the extensive exposure to ID issues of various disciplines, and enable you to work with these specialists when the need arises.
In addition, a one-year post ACGME-I certification training in either research or clinical electives is required before you are allowed to sit for the specialist examination. After passing the examination, you will be certified by the Specialists Accreditation Board (SAB), Singapore Medical Council (SMC) as an ID physician.
The SingHealth Infectious Diseases Senior Residency Program is your foundation to a promising career as an Infectious Disease Physician. You can choose to become an excellent clinician, a quality educator or a pioneering researcher. You may also have the option to pursue a subspecialty field of ID such as HIV, Travel Medicine or Transplant.
