Congratulations on completing your basic training in Internal Medicine and a warm welcome to the next phase of your training and career.
Gastroenterology is a unique specialty which provides a combination of the best in medicine. It allows you to utilize your medical training to constantly deliver the best care to your patients and provides the opportunity for procedural work in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
You will face exciting challenges in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal, liver and multi-systemic disorders involving the liver and GI tract. At the same time, you will also experience adrenaline-filled moments and opportunities for life-saving intervention.
Here at the SingHealth Gastroenterology Senior Residency Program, you will be guided by our experienced and dedicated teaching faculty at the Singapore General Hospital and Changi General Hospital. In addition you will be exposed to a wide array of cases spanning the breadth and depth of clinical gastroenterology.

The Singhealth Gastroenterology Senior Residency Program is anchored by an experienced and dedicated faculty who are committed to transmitting knowledge, skills and values so as to produce skilled and caring gastroenterologists. Our faculty includes esteemed physicians who are “teachers of teachers” and leaders in the field of gastroenterology.
Our patients: The breadth and depth of gastroenterology in one place
Within the SGH and CGH campus, we collectively see and manage a vast array of gastroenterology and hepatology cases, from the common everyday conditions to the most complex cases of liver failure, inflammatory bowel disease, complicated pancreatitis, etc. As a training center we are confident in providing a broad case-mix that will certainly satisfy the training needs of all our Residents.
Our program: A structured and complete training in Gastroenterology
We have a comprehensive training program designed to imbibe the core competencies of the ACGME within a framework that includes inpatient and ambulatory care, consult services, endoscopic training and subspecialty rotations including liver transplantation, inflammatory bowel disease/nutrition, motility disorders, research, advanced endoscopy and many others.

General Program Overview

The SingHealth Gastroenterology Senior Residency Program is a three-year program. In Year 1, you will be exposed to inpatient and ambulatory Gastroenterology and Hepatology, basic endoscopy training and supervised GI/Liver consult services. In Year 2, you can look forward to subspecialty rotations in IBD/Nutrition and Liver Transplantation and advanced endoscopy training in addition to Inpatient/Ambulatory and Consult rotations. Finally, in Year 3, you will have the opportunity to complete a six-month research rotation under the supervision of a research mentor and will be given the chance to choose an elective rotation.
Trainees who have a passion for research can also opt for the Clinician Scientist Track on our Program. Clinician-Scientist trainees will undergo a minimum of 18 months of clinical training in addition to 1 year of protected research time under the supervision of a research mentor.
Trainees who complete the SingHealth Gastroenterology Senior Residency Program will be capable of independent practice as a competent gastroenterologist.
You will be well-prepared to pass the Specialists Accreditation Board’s exit exams that will enable you to practice as an accredited specialist in the field of Gastroenterology in Singapore and provide gastroenterology services to the various hospitals in the country.
Selected candidates will have the opportunity for further training in subspecialty fields, such as liver transplantation and endoscopic retrograde cholagiopancreaticography (ERCP), both locally and abroad, as part of a fellowship training program.
