About the Programme

An Internal Medicine (IM) physician sees a large variety of patients with different symptoms, signs and diagnoses. The work is always challenging and satisfying and the day is never boring.

With population growth, medical tourism, ageing population and the ramping up of medical services in Singapore, IM physicians are expected to be in high demand. A wealth of career options awaits you: choose to work in academic centres, emerging new general hospitals, or at inpatient, as well as outpatient settings.

You can also opt to provide step-down care in community hospitals or practice preventive health care in a community-based healthcare setting.

We value learning, teamwork, honesty, integrity and fair play and we want someone who will share our ethos of putting patients at the centre of everything we do. If this sounds like you, we welcome you to join the SingHealth Advanced Internal Medicine Senior Residency Programme.

Message from the Programme Director

Congratulations on completing your junior Residency or basic specialist training. As you ponder the next step in your training and career, I would like to share with you my training journey and how SingHealth Advanced Internal Medicine Senior Residency Programme can play a role in yours.

I trained under the old BST (Basic Specialist Training) scheme and spent six years rotating through various departments before specialising in Infectious Disease (ID). During the six years, I had time to grow in experience, confidence and maturity. I developed different perspectives and fostered friendships with colleagues from different clinical subspecialties.

The Residency programme of today is a vast improvement from the old training system. You rotate through a series of core and elective subspecialties over just three years and become proficient in multiple competencies.

However, some of you may not feel you are ready to take on the role of a senior doctor, which in this modern day environment, include education, research, administrative and leadership components, in addition to clinical care of patient.

Thus, we have designed our programme such that; In addition to developing your skills in patient care, you will also be taught pedagogy knowledge, research know-how and administrative skills so you will be well-prepared to embrace any career track.

Whether you plan to do IM as a life-long career or choose to train in a subspecialty upon completion of our Programme, the SingHealth Advanced Internal Medicine Senior Residency Programme will add value to your training journey and your career.

Programme Director, Advanced Internal Medicine

Why Choose Advanced Internal Medicine?

Hone Your Clinical Skills in Internal Medicine
Guided by senior clinicians, you will have the opportunity to hone your diagnostic and clinical management capabilities through a combination of patient exposure, application of evidence-based medicine and regular case discussions with colleagues and seniors. You will also learn how to provide patient-centric care and participate in projects to improve healthcare delivery in our institutions.

Well-rounded Exposure and Skills
To prepare you for your future role as clinician-educator, clinician-researcher and/or clinician-leader, you will also be given educational, research, administrative and leadership training and given such responsibilities within the departments. Such skills will be highly useful in your career, whether you choose to do IM eventually or embark on a second advanced Residency.

Opportunity for Overseas and Local Attachments
We believe in independent thinking and opening our Residents’ minds to the practice of medicine outside SingHealth. Hence, Residents may have the opportunity opt to do a three-month elective at an overseas medical centre or work with non-governmental organisations to provide relief work in developing countries under our Global Health Initiative. You can also choose to take up local attachments at community hospitals, primary care settings or even at the Ministry of Health.

Experienced and Dedicated Faculty
Our highly experienced and dedicated Faculty believes in passing on the right medical knowledge, expertise and values to the next generation to help you achieve your full potential. Many of our Faculty members have trained and grown up in SingHealth institutions. We invest in your growth as a person, not just a doctor; and train you with the view of your joining our family.
